There are three basic patterns that contribute to becoming overweight:

Pattern #1
Emotional Eating: this is probably the number one reason for gaining weight.  Many times people will eat because they confuse uncomfortable feelings with hunger. For instance, some people will tell me they feel hunger in their chest, which is not physical hunger. Others say they feel hunger in their lower abdomen, which is not physical hunger either.  Hypnosis can help you improve the thinking that connects these feelings with overeating.

In a 2005 scientific review of the effectiveness of complementary therapies for reducing body weight, the only complementary therapy that had a significant effect 18 months after the study, was hypnosis directed at stress reduction as an aid to weight loss1.

Pattern #2
Poor Eating Habits and Faulty Programming: do you tend to eat portions that are too large?  Have you gotten into the habit of snacking during the day, or at night after dinner?  Do you eat nutritionally poor foods?  Do you eat while watching TV, or working on the computer? All of these will contribute to weight gain. Habits like these can be successfully changed using hypnosis.

Pattern #3
Obsessive Dieting: dieting has gotten a bad name over the past few years, and there's a good reason for this - scientific research published by the American Psychological Association (2007) shows that more than 90% of people who attempt to lose weight by dieting fail2. In addition, the research showed that two-thirds of dieters regained more weight than they lost on their diets.

The more diets people try and fail at, the more they convince themselves they will never be able to lose weight.  The real reason that most weight loss programs don’t work has nothing to do with you – it’s to do with the fact that starving your body sets up biological reactions that work against permanent weight loss.

Will weight loss hypnosis work for everyone?

No, not exactly.  I have worked with clients in the past who eat too much because they, “just love eating too much food”, or have “always eaten too-large portions” and don’t want to change this.  It’s OK to for a prospective client to have these beliefs if they are open changing them.  Loving food is not problematic in itself, slim people love food too, but if you want to lose weight, it’s not OK to go back for a second helping. In addition to reducing emotional eating, hypnosis can strongly amplify your resistance to having that second helping, but your basic desire to change must be there.

Another reason hypnosis may not work is if a person’s diet consists primarily of over processed, or junk food.  Over-processed food lacks the complex organic building blocks our bodies need.  According to weight loss and wellness author, Dr. Joel Furhman, as we eat a meal our body actually monitors the nutritional quality of what we are eating.  If it does not register good nutrition, it will spur us to continue eating in search of the complex organic building blocks. In his book “Eat to Live”, Dr. Joel Furhman provides substantial research-backed evidence on the impact of nutritionally poor foods on general health and obesity3.
